𝐖HAT ARE THE MOTORCYCLE LICENSING REQUIREMENT IN CALIFORNIA?

Posted by Joseph Lavelle | Aug 02, 2022 | 0 Comments

There are certain motorcycle licensing requirements and although the process is very simple there are certain steps you will need to take to get your license depending on your needs.

California issues different classes of driver licenses for operating any two-vehicle:

  • Class M1- This license permits operation of any two-wheeled motorcycle and all vehicles listed in class M2.
  • Class M2- You can operate any motorcycle bicycle, moped, or motorized scooter.

These licenses are only for those who want to operate a two-wheeled vehicle. The California DMV permits anyone who has a valid Class C license, this license is issued for standard vehicle operation, to operate a motorcycle with sidecar attatched.

REQUIREMENTS

BELOW 21 YEAR OF AGE:

  • The process of earning a license depends upon the age of the applicant. Person below the age of 21 year needs to complete the additional steps for getting a license.
  • You need to take and complete a CMP approved California Motorcyclist Safety Program training course and show the completion certificate to the DMV.
  • Once you get the permission you will apply for a full CML.
  • The DMV requires your instruction permit, proof of completing driver education and training, and your completion certificate from Motorcycle Training Course.

ABOVE 21 YEAR OF AGE:

  • Persons who are over 21 years old may directly apply for a license without taking an instruction permit.
  • One needs to either require CMSP or pass the motorcycle driving test at the DMV.
  • The test includes a pre-trip inspection, riding in different track paths, slow ride and gear track.

No matter what your age is, if you complete all the requirements then you will be issued with the temporary license and your other license will follow shortly in the mail.
